Smooth collies are not border collies - they are similar to rough collies (like Lassie) but with short hair. They are a vulnerable native breed due to the low number of puppies born each year. The Smooth Collie page in the Breed Information Directory on this site has some very useful information.
The Smooth Collie’s origins are less documented compared to the Rough Collie but are believed to date back to early Scottish herding dogs, potentially crossed with Roman dogs introduced in England during the 5th century. The breed’s name may derive from the Colley sheep they herded or from Gaelic terms meaning doggie.
Early Development
Bred primarily for herding in the milder Scottish Lowlands, the Smooth Collie was developed with a shorter, close-lying coat suitable for temperate climates. Its early breeding involved producing a hardworking, intelligent dog capable of managing livestock across varied terrains. Queen Victoria's patronage during the 19th century notably elevated the breed’s profile, as she maintained Smooth Collies on her Balmoral estates and acquired several dogs for her kennel, transforming them into popular companions and show dogs as well.
Modern Recognition
The Kennel Club formally recognised the Smooth Collie as a distinct breed in 1994, separating it officially from the Rough Collie which still shares many similarities. Despite this, the Smooth Collie has become classified as a vulnerable native breed in the UK due to declining numbers. Enthusiasts and breeders are encouraged to register interest to preserve the breed’s legacy and maintain responsible breeding programmes to safeguard its future.
